Where Mangal Dosha comes from

Mangal Dosha — also called Manglik or Kuja dosha — arises when Mars occupies certain houses of the chart, most commonly the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. Counted from the ascendant, and in many traditions also from the Moon and from Venus, Mars in these positions is held to add heat and friction to marriage, which is why the placement is checked before a match. Because the houses are read from the Lagna, an accurate birth time is required: a shift in the ascendant can move Mars into or out of a dosha-forming house.

Crucially, the dosha is frequently cancelled. Mars in its own or exalted sign, the involvement of benefics, the same dosha present in both charts, and several classical exceptions can all neutralise it. A responsible reading therefore checks not only whether Mars sits in a flagged house but whether any cancellation applies — which is what turns a raw flag into a meaningful judgement.
